World Cup Pinball Machine

Vintage Arcade Superstore is now home to a Williams Electronics’ World Cup pinball machine. This particular pinball game was released on March 6th, 1978. The World Cup pinball machine was reportedly the first of Williams’ solid-state pin games that had electronic sounds, rather than chimes. However, early production examples of World Cup did have chimes.

This 4-player game features 2 pop-bumpers, 2 kick-out holes, 2 ball kickers, 2 standup targets and a spinning target. The game’s design was done by Edward Tomaszewski, with art by Christian Marche, Sound by Randy Pfeiffer and software by Ron Crouse.

The World Cup pinball machine flyer describes the following game features:

SUPER BONUS

The ball descends with three opportunities: down the center for a “goal” (when lit), or through the ST or AR lanes for “Super Bonus” opportunity. Each times you knock out S-T-A-R your Bonus Score increases “x” amount of times.

CORNER KICK

It’s a corner kick… and its success is based on the odds of the real game. Your best chance scoring a “Goal”? An upward long show from the lower left flipper, or bank of the nearby bumper.

GOAL SCOREBOARD

Here’s your scoreboard for goals… with a super memory! It registers the number of goals scored by each player and continues to do so for each ball thereafter. (Example: After scoring four goals on the first ball, the scoreboard will then re-register four goals as you begin your second ball, regardless of how many players have come between your first and second ball.)

WORLD CUP

Here’s where you “STAR” qualities come out! Knock out S-T-A-R once and score is multiplied times two (x2). Knock it out twice, score is multiplied times three… then times five. “STAR” feature also lights “World Cup” for possible “Extra Ball” and “Super Star” for “Specials”… and the points just keep on coming.
